On September 12th we participated in the 2nd annual Amputee Walk my brother-in-law puts on. It was a 5k and although some people might think an amputee walk is kind of an oxymoron, my sister-in-law and I were talking about what a great opportunity for these amputees this walk really is. These amputees can prove to themselves and others that although they may not have two perfect legs they are not defeated. There was one amputee in particular that walked the entire way. He was the very last one to come across the finish line, but he was determined to finish! It was such a proud moment for himself and his loved ones. I got a little emotional seeing him come to the finish with his crutches. What an accomplishment for him to tell others he participated in and finished a 5k walk! There was also a little boy there, maybe 8 years old that was also an amputee that ran over to him so that they could finish together. I am so glad that my brother-in-law puts this together despite his busy schedule. It is a time for amputees to come together and remember they are not alone and a time for those of us with two legs to have a taste of humility and remember how blessed we are.
